Summary
A full overhaul of The Dallas Morning News’ online sports coverage, including redesigned stats and live play-by-play experiences. A new in-house CMS was built to replace a third-party system for real-time data entry. This tool supports a network of stringers attending high school football games across the DFW area, enabling them to enter plays in real time.
Key Features
- Custom CMS for real-time sports stats and play-by-play entry
- Optimized desktop interface for fast, error-resistant live updates
- Auto-calculated fields with easy manual overrides
- Responsive front-end for displaying stats and play-by-play
Implementation
I designed and built the front end for the new in-house CMS, gathering detailed requirements in close collaboration with the sports team. I was especially proud of this work because I initially had very limited knowledge of football, which made translating complex rules into precise requirements a fun challenge. After launch, we collected feedback from stringers and continued iterating on usability and performance improvements. For example, we refined the tab order of some of the play-by-play data entry fields to speed up their workflow.
